The Best Robotic Pool Cleaners for Bugs: Dolphin Picks
Not all robotic pool cleaners are built the same. These are the machines we'd put in a pool for Bugs — chosen for filtration, coverage, and reliability, and every one is a genuine Dolphin.
The term "robotic pool cleaner" covers everything from bargain floor-only vacuums to commercial-grade machines. When you're shopping for Bugs, the difference between the wrong robot and the right one is filtration, coverage, and build quality — three areas where Dolphin robots by Maytronics consistently lead.
Bugs — beetles, water boatmen, gnats, and the occasional wasp — mostly float before they sink, so a floor-only robot misses the worst of them. Clearing bugs is really about the surface and the waterline.
What to look for in a robotic pool cleaner for Bugs
The best approach to bugs combines surface skimming with fine filtration and waterline cleaning. A dedicated solar skimmer clears floating insects all day, while a fine-filter robot captures the ones that sink and scrubs the bug residue from the waterline. Together they keep both the surface and the water column clear.
- Surface skimming for floating bugs
- Waterline cleaning for residue

Frequently asked questions
What's the best way to get bugs out of a pool?
Bugs float, so surface skimming clears the most. Pairing a solar skimmer like the Skimmi with a waterline-cleaning robot removes both floating and sunken insects.
Will a robotic pool cleaner catch floating bugs?
A floor cleaner catches bugs after they sink. To remove floating insects continuously, add a surface skimmer such as the Dolphin Skimmi.
Do I still need a skimmer basket at the pump?
Your pad skimmer helps, but it only pulls from the surface near the intake. A roaming solar skimmer covers the whole surface.
