Why Corded Still Wins

Cordless robots get the attention, but almost every robot that keeps a full-size in-ground pool spotless all season is a corded robotic pool cleaner. The cable is the reason: unlimited runtime, a weekly timer that runs the robot while you are at work, and enough power for commercial-grade motors and 2-micron filtration. Cable management, the one real objection, was solved years ago by the anti-tangle swivel.

What to look for in a corded pool robot

Match the cable length to the pool: 40 ft on the Escape for above-ground pools, 50 to 55 ft on the Cayman, Quantum, Premier and Sigma, 60 ft on the Explorer E30 to E70. Insist on an anti-tangle swivel (standard on the ProLine™ and Explorer™) and a weekly timer in the power supply so the robot runs itself. Then choose the filtration and coverage your pool needs.

  • Cable long enough to reach the far end: 40 to 60 ft by model
  • 360° anti-tangle swivel on the cable
  • Weekly timer in the power supply, or app control
  • Floor, walls and waterline on in-ground pools
  • 2 to 3-year warranty from an authorized Dolphin dealer

What a corded Dolphin does that a battery cannot

Turning on the weekly timer on a Dolphin Quantum power supply
Weekly Timer

Runs while you are at work.

The power supply on the Quantum, Premier and Cayman carries a weekly timer: every day, every other day or once a week, with no app and no Wi-Fi. Set it in spring and the pool is clean every morning until you close it. The Weekly Timer power supply upgrade adds the same scheduling to compatible models.

Lowering a Dolphin Premier into the pool by its cable
Anti-Tangle Swivel

The cable that untwists itself.

A patented 360° swivel in the cable lets the robot crisscross the pool without winding the cord into knots. Lay the cable out straight in the sun for a few minutes before the first run of the season and a corded Dolphin stays tangle-free for the rest of it.

The dual motors inside a Dolphin Cayman
Commercial-Grade Motors

Taken from the Dolphin Wave lineup.

Mains power through a low-voltage supply means a corded robot can run the same motors as Dolphin’s commercial Wave cleaners: over 75 gallons a minute of filtration on the ProLine™, three motors on the Sigma, and dual 24-volt motors moving 4,000+ gallons an hour on the Max-Series™. A two-hour Cayman cycle costs about 10 cents of electricity.

A clean waterline beside a Dolphin Premier
Waterline

Scrubs the tile line, not just the floor.

Every ProLine™ robot climbs the walls on HyperGrip™ tracks and lingers at the waterline to scrub the oily, scaly ring that makes a pool look dirty from across the yard. The Cayman and the Explorer line climb the walls; the Escape covers the floor.

Cable length by pool size

The rule is simple: the cable should reach the far corner of the pool from where the power supply sits, with slack to spare. Dolphin rates the Escape (40 ft cord) for pools up to 33 ft, the Cayman (50 ft PowerFlex cord) for pools up to 33 ft, and the Quantum, Premier and Sigma (55 ft swivel cable) for pools up to 50 ft. The Explorer E30, E50 and E70 carry a 60 ft swivel cable for 50 ft pools. For pools longer than 50 ft, see the 50-foot pool guide or the commercial Wave.

Taming the cable

Three habits keep a corded robot tangle-free. Place the power supply where the manual specifies, back from the water’s edge and centred on the long side of the pool so the cable reaches both ends. Unroll the cable and lay it in the sun for a few minutes before the first run of the season so it loses its coil memory. And lift the robot out by the handle, not the cable, then loop the cable loosely on a caddy or hook. A Dolphin caddy keeps the robot, cable and power supply together between cycles.

Is a corded pool robot safe?

Yes. Corded Dolphins do not run on mains voltage in the water. The power supply converts household power to low-voltage DC on the deck and sends only that down the cable, and the supply plugs into a GFCI-protected outlet. Keep the power supply the distance from the pool the manual specifies, do not swim while the robot is running, and lift it out by the handle.

Questions & Answers

Corded: frequently asked questions

Are corded robotic pool cleaners better than cordless?

For most in-ground pools, yes. A corded Dolphin runs on a weekly timer all season with no charging, carries stronger motors and finer filtration (NanoFilters down to 2 microns), scrubs the waterline and comes with a 2 to 3-year warranty, usually for less money. Cordless robots win only on the absence of the cable.

How long is the cable on a robotic pool cleaner?

Dolphin cables run from 40 ft on the Escape and E10 to 50 ft on the Cayman and Explorer E20, 55 ft on the Quantum, Premier and Sigma, and 60 ft on the Explorer E30, E50 and E70. Commercial Wave robots carry 60 to 140 ft.

Does the cable tangle?

Not on a robot with an anti-tangle swivel, which is standard on the ProLine, the Explorer E30 to E70 and most Dolphins. The swivel lets the cable rotate freely as the robot turns. Laying the cable out in the sun before the first run of the season removes its coil memory.

Does a corded robot need an outlet by the pool?

It needs a GFCI outlet within reach of the power supply's cord, with the supply placed back from the water as the manual specifies. If there is no outlet anywhere near the pool, a cordless Dolphin Liberty is the better choice.

Can a corded robot stay in the pool between cycles?

It can, but Maytronics recommends lifting it out after each cycle to extend the life of the cable, seals and brushes and to keep it clear of shock treatments. A weekly timer plus a quick lift-out by the handle is the routine most owners settle into.

Is it safe to swim while the robot is running?

Maytronics says not to swim while the robot operates. Corded Dolphins run on low-voltage DC from a power supply that sits back from the water, but the moving robot and its cable are not something to share the pool with. Run it before you swim or overnight.

How often should a pool robot run?

Two or three cycles a week keeps most residential pools clean; pools under trees or in dusty areas may want a daily cycle in season. A weekly timer (Quantum, Premier, Cayman) or the app (Sigma, EON) handles this for you.
